In 1890, Western Australia was granted responsible government. John Forrest became the States first Premier, 1890 1901.

From this time onwards State Governors continued to be appointed, but their powers were limited to those of the Executive Council.

In 1901 the States and Territories federated under a national constitution to become members of the Commonwealth of Australia. All the States appoint their own Governors with limited powers.
