Rockingham Gateway Your complete guide to Rockingham W.A

Cockburn Sound Western Australia

With all these changes over the years Palm beach jetty still stands and although you dont see the quantity of fish today that were there in years gone by it is still a very popular spot for hard core fisherman and families alike. Pink snapper and mulloway are still caught in numbers off this jetty from time to time. In winter when the north-westerly winds howl across Cockburn sound and the waves are pounding the jetties you will always find a couple of fishos wetting a line and themselves in the hope of catching a big pinkie.

When spring appears you will find the jetties packed with hopefuls, the pink snapper breed at this time of the year and come into Cockburn sound in huge schools. Last October I remember there were big catches off the A.S.I groyne in Kwinana. There were masses of pink snapper cruising up and down the rock wall and one night there were reportedly over 150 pink snapper caught off the groyne. With these large quantities of fish around at this time of year it is easy to see why fisheries wish to close snapper fishing at this time of year.

The Kwinana wreck jetty also performs well for snapper in spring, one young fisho Gary Flynn caught two snapper one evening last October from this jetty. One was ten kilos and the other 6 kilos.

I suppose the advantage palm beach and the Rockingham yacht club jetties have is the fact both reach out into the deep water of Cockburn sound. With a reasonable cast you can get your line into 17metres of water. This gives you opportunity for all sorts of fish. The summer of 1998 I remember reporting on a few fishos hooking up on big yellowfin tuna that had come within casting distance of Palm Beach jetty. The fish were never landed but it shows that these deep-water jetties can be full of surprises. Even Spanish mackerel and cobia have been hooked and some landed over the years from Palm Beach jetty.

In summer when the families start coming out for a bit of fun the jetties provide an easy fishing platform and usually hold good numbers of whiting/ slimy mackerel/tailor/ herring and gardies. At times the fish can be prolific from these great land based platforms.

So with a few tips and pointers in the right direction palm beach/ Rockingham yacht club/ and Kwinana wreck jetties can provide hours of fishing pleasure all year round.

With Thanks
