Lake Richmond Anne Mueller Environmental Walk

Lake Richmond is a 40 hectare freshwater lake, measuring 1000 meter's by 600 meter's in size and 15 meter's deep.

The lake is home to the endangered thrombolites, which can be seen around the edges of the lake as you walk along the board walk that goes around parts of the lake. One can follow the numbered sign posts to view many interesting plants, birds and other wild life.

Thrombolites are rock like structures and are found on the edges of Lake Richmond. They cover a range of sizes, morphologies and presumably ages. The building components are probably micro organisms of lacustrine origin and of subterranean origin due to the location of the lake. Such micro organisms are able to precipitate calcium carbonate from the waters as they photosynthetise, forming their mineralised structure.

The thrombolites are one of the earliest forms of life on earth. A self guided walk with a brochure starts at the observation platform at the corner of Safety Bay Road and Lake Street.

Tiger snakes are known to hang around around the edges of the lake, so make sure you stay on the boardwalk. The lake is too deep for swimming and fishing is not a good idea.
