Rockingham is located 30 kilometres south of Fremantle and occupies 267 square kilometres with 43 kms of coastland.

As a regional centre being on the edge of the metropolitan area, Rockingham is the largest city in Western Australia outside of Perth. Offering a diverse lifestyle of coastal, urban and rural choices the population is regarded amongst the youngest in Australia at a median age of 31 years, with the average household size of 2.7.

More than 65% of the population were born in Australia with the United Kingdom being the predominate birthplace oveseas.

Of its workforce, almost 30% have Engineering qualifications, more than 25% are employed as Managers, Administrators and Professionals, 20% have trade qualifications and 50% of households have 2 cars or more.

Almost 25% of households are categorised as high income, (ie a weekly income of $1200 or more.)

Rockingham has experienced strong population growth doubling in size in the last 14 years (trebling in the past 20 years), and is poised for an increase of almost 60% in the next 15 years.

The area has a diverse economic base centred around defence, manufacturing, construction, property, horticulture, viticulture, aquaculture, fishing, retail, light industry, tourism and commerce. Employment opportunities in the area are diverse and plentiful with major manufacturing, processing and industrial development forming a complex mix of resource based industries to our immediate north and the world-class marine precinct at Henderson .

The area is served with all tertiary educational institutions dominated by Murdoch University . Quite significantly, the whole school of Engineering and Engineering Science was transferred from Murdoch University 's South Street location to the new Rockingham Campus in 1996. The numbers of 24 to 40 year olds in the South west metro region of Western Australia who have degree or higher qualifications in Engineering (from the May 2000 survey of Transition form Education to Work Cat. The City of Rockingham is located 47 kilometres south/west of Perth.

Population
The estimated resident population of the City is 81,000. The number of electors is 46,368 and the number of dwellings is 28,231.

Area
The area of the City is 261 square kilometres. The total length of sealed roads is 707 kilometres and the total length of unsealed roads is 22 kilometres.

Only a 45 minute drive south from Perth, Rockingham is a popular destination for day trippers and holiday makers alike.

The safe, sandy beaches and sheltered waters of Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds are ideal for aquatic activities.such as swimming, diving, sailing, boating, windsurfing and fishing.

The many beautiful offshore islands are added attractions, with their sculpted limestone rocks, little coves and reef areas for diving and snorkelling.

Not all the attractions in Rockingham involve the seacoast. Others include horse riding, tenpin bowling, swimming pool, shopping (especially at weekends in holiday periods), cinemas and the many restaurants. In the nearby area are two wineries, a wildlife park and a water ski park.

There are also many picnic places and barbecue facilities along the foreshore, including Bell and Churchill Parks, which have expansive lawns and shady trees.

History inclined visitors will enjoy following the Heritage Trails and browsing in the Rockingham Museum which has interesting displays about the early days. The self drive and bicycle tour Rockingham also visits many places of historical and present day interest.

The Council is well served by a Mayor and nine Councillors who voluntarily look after the interests of the Community. The Mayor and Councillors with their wealth of experience and professionalism serve to meet the requirements of the Community at all times and are readily available to residents.
