East Rockingham Western Australia
This suburb derives its name from its location east of Rockingham.
The settlement of East Rockingham was developed in the early 1840's.
Early land grants were given to Marshall Mc Dermott, who arrived in
1831 on the Stirling, and Michael Quinn who arrived in 1835 from Ireland.
The region developed as settlers Henry and Charles Mead purchased
a huge area of land extending from Mount Brown in the north, Mangles
Bay to the west and east to Peel's land grants. The area covered the
existing Kwinana Industrial strip, the townsites of Medina and Calista
and most of Rockingham. With the arrival of W Curtis 1846, Herbert
1845/55, Key 1854, Smirk 1855, Hymus 1855, Bell 1855, Day/White 1858,
W Mead 1856, C Armstrong 1868, Thomas 1870 and Sloan 1880, the townsite
at East Rockingham was established.
Herbert built The Bush Inn / Rockingham Arms 1854/55. The Inn became
the focal point of the settlement serving as a Post Office, goods
depot, a haven for travellers and settlers, a holiday destination
for dignitaries and meeting place for the townsfolk.
